I know, I know. Already done with another book?! It’s true. Well, it was pretty short, but also quite a page-turner.

It’s about a future society where people’s decisions are all made for them and everyone and everything is pretty much the same. There’s no pain or suffering, but also no real love either. People have no recollection of these things either. Except for one person – the receiver of memories. Now he has to pass on the memories to a new person (so now he’s the giver – hence the title), a 12 year old boy named Jonas. And then the shit hits the fan!

This is actually an award-winning (Newberry Medal – remember that?!) young adult’s book, and I liked it quite a bit. It has a very redeeming message about the importance of individuality and our ability to control our own destinies. Ultimately it’s impossible to shield oneself from the pain and suffering in the world. We have no receiver to keep these things from us. We have to face life with eyes wide open and be able to deal with the bad things along with the joys in life.  Okay, reality, here I come!

Now where’d I place that wine glass?
